Popupsmart review: what it does and what it counts
Popupsmart is a popup builder at popupsmart.com. You paste one snippet into your site, or install its Shopify app or WordPress plugin, then build, target and publish popups from the vendor's dashboard. Its help center describes a drag-and-drop editor, ready-made templates, targeting rules and a simple analytics view, and says no coding is needed beyond the embed code.
The meter matters more than the feature list. The pricing page says one pageview is counted each time a page of your site loads, and the help center says counts reset on the first day of each month. This review reads the vendor's own pages, help articles and terms as of October 23, 2026, and leaves plan amounts to the live pricing page.
What the free plan includes
- Traffic: 5,000 pageviews a month, one website, one live popup and 100 emails a month, with standard support, according to the pricing page. You can build more popups than that, but only one can run at a time.
- Triggers: the vendor says exit intent, scroll depth and time on page are on every plan, the free one included. Its feature table also lists display frequency and targeting by operating system, page address, traffic source and new or returning visitor.
- Branding: the paid plan cards each list Unbranded and the Free card does not, so check what a free popup displays before you publish.
- Install: paste the embed code before the closing body tag or use Google Tag Manager, then verify the site in the dashboard.
- Platforms: the vendor lists a Shopify app with a free plan and a WordPress plugin. Its WordPress page says the plugin directory flags a lack of testing with the latest three WordPress releases, and it offers the embed code as the plugin-free route.
Where the vendor pages disagree
Two statements do not line up, so read the checkout screen on the day you buy.
Refunds: the pricing page gives a 7-day window for monthly plans and 15 days for annual plans in one place, and 15 days for monthly plans and one month for annual plans in another. The terms of use say 7 days for monthly plans and 15 days for annual plans. Support: the feature table says email is answered within 8 hours in one row and within 24 hours in another, and chat answers are timed to working hours in the GMT plus 3 time zone, so check those hours against your own.
Limits to weigh before you rely on it
- Every page load counts, including pages where no popup appears, so a busy site spends its allowance on traffic rather than on popup views. Popupsmart vs OptinMonster shows a meter that counts differently.
- When the allowance runs out, the billing help describes auto-extend as the way to keep popups showing and emails sending. It bills extra pageviews in blocks of 10,000 and extra emails in blocks of 500, and notifications you send to yourself count toward the email quota.
- Paid subscriptions renew automatically, fees are owed for the full billing period regardless of use, and the terms give no refund for unused time after you cancel.
- The free plan allows one live popup, so an exit offer and a scroll signup cannot run together.
- Claims such as no effect on loading speed and Google compliance are the vendor's own. Google's guidance is covered in how to create an exit intent popup.
Who Popupsmart fits, and who should pick something else
- Fits: a small shop or content site near the free allowance that wants one exit-intent or scroll popup and has no developer.
- Fits: a Shopify store that wants an app with a free plan, which the Shopify listing states, and cart-based targeting, which the vendor's home page describes.
- Consider OptiMonk for a larger free allowance: its pricing page lists 10,000 pageviews a month on the free plan, with every feature on every plan.
- Consider a free WordPress plugin such as Popup Maker for one WordPress site. Its listing says exit-intent and scroll triggers need Popup Maker Pro.
- Compare the full shortlist in best popup builder for small business before you install anything.
How to weigh the reviews you will find
The vendor's home page links to its profiles on G2, the Shopify App Store, Capterra and Trustpilot, and shows what it chose to display from them. Open those profiles yourself, sort by newest and by lowest, and check whether complaints concern billing, support or the features you need. Customer results quoted on vendor pages, such as conversion figures, are the vendor's own and depend on each site's traffic and offer, in line with the FTC's endorsement guides. The pricing guide explains how billing works.
