What is Popupsmart? A popup builder run from a dashboard
Popupsmart is a conversion optimization tool from Popupsmart Inc, according to its terms of use. Its help center describes it as a no-code popup builder. You add one line of code to your site before the closing body tag, load it through Google Tag Manager, or install its Shopify app or WordPress plugin. After that, every campaign is built, targeted and published from the vendor's dashboard instead of inside your site's own code.
This guide reads the vendor's help center, pricing page, home page and terms as of October 23, 2026.
How Popupsmart works in four steps
- Install and verify: copy the embed code from the dashboard, add it to the site and verify the website. The help center says popups show only on verified sites.
- Build: choose a template, from a library the vendor puts at more than 500, or start from a blank page, then edit elements in the drag-and-drop editor through its Customize and Style steps.
- Target: the Segment step sets who sees the popup and when, using triggers such as exit intent, scroll depth, time on page, device, new or returning visitor, page address and traffic source.
- Publish and connect: publish from the Publish step, connect an email or CRM tool such as Mailchimp or HubSpot, and read results in the analytics and leads views.
The parts of a campaign: what kinds of popup it can show
- Goals listed on the pricing page include email collection, announcements, forms, cookie consent notices, cart reminders, product recommendations, gamified offers and phone-call prompts.
- Formats include a centered popup, a small sidebar popup in the lower right corner, a full-screen popup and a floating bar, plus a teaser step and a success step.
- Campaigns can run in one step or several, according to the help center.
Where Popupsmart runs
Because the install is a script, Popupsmart runs on most sites, and the vendor's home page names Shopify, WordPress, Webflow and Wix. The Shopify App Store listing says a free plan is available. On WordPress you can use the vendor's plugin or paste the embed code into the theme footer; the vendor's WordPress page says the plugin directory flags a lack of testing with the latest three WordPress releases, and it presents the embed code as the plugin-free route. Leads can go to a connected email tool, and the pricing page also lists local data storage if you connect none.
Where the boundary sits: what Popupsmart leaves to other tools
- Email sending: Popupsmart passes leads to a tool such as Mailchimp or Klaviyo, and its own email quota counts the emails it sends, such as autoresponders and notifications. Choosing an email service is a separate decision, covered at Email Platform Desk.
- Other site tools: landing pages and chat widgets are separate product types. The pages read here describe popups, forms, targeting, analytics and an email autoresponder.
- Judgment about timing: Google's guidance on intrusive interstitials and Nielsen Norman Group's research on popups both warn about overlays that interrupt visitors, so timing and size still matter. See how to create an exit intent popup.
