How to add a popup on Squarespace: two routes
You add a popup on Squarespace with its built-in promotional pop-up, or with a popup tool's code pasted into Code Injection. The first is on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans, according to Squarespace's help page. The second uses an embed code, the one line of JavaScript that loads a tool such as Popupsmart.
The built-in pop-up appears on a timer, on scroll or both. For exit intent, or for signups that go to an email platform other than Squarespace Email Campaigns, Mailchimp or Google Drive, use the second route.
Popupsmart has not approved us as an affiliate yet, so we earn nothing from these links.
Try Popupsmart →Route 1: the built-in promotional pop-up
- Customize the pop-up's content, action, display and timing, image and style.
- Set a timer, a scroll point or both. With both, the pop-up appears when the first one happens.
- In Display & timing, set Frequency for returning visitors (Never means they never see it a second time), check Don't show again after newsletter signup, and check Show on mobile if phones should see it.
- Switch the Display pop-up toggle on, then click Save.
The newsletter action stores emails only in Squarespace Email Campaigns, Mailchimp or Google Drive, and it can't collect a name. Pop-ups don't appear on member-site pages or index sub-pages. On phones the pop-up fills half the screen, and Squarespace notes that larger layouts may affect SEO.
Route 2: a popup tool through Code Injection
- Open the Code Injection panel.
- Paste the tool's embed code into the Footer box, once. Squarespace injects Footer code before the closing body tag on every page.
- Squarespace says JavaScript in a field needs script tags around it, so check the code has them, then save.
Two limits come from Squarespace's help pages. Code injection is available on Core, Plus, Advanced and some legacy plans, and checkout pages don't support injected code, so a tool's popup can't run at checkout. Code injection also won't appear on Index landing pages. Add your website in the Popupsmart dashboard and verify it, since popups show only on verified sites.
Exit intent on Squarespace
The built-in pop-up settings list a timer and a scroll point but no exit-intent option. Exit intent shows the popup when a visitor seems about to leave: on desktop, cursor movement toward the edge of the window, and on mobile, a fast upward scroll. A tool adds it.
Popupsmart's embed code goes once into Squarespace's Code Injection Footer box, and its free plan adds exit intent. The free plan covers one Squarespace site, exit intent included, at 5,000 pageviews a month and one live popup, with Popupsmart branding. The best popup builder for small business compares it with other tools, and how to create an exit intent popup gives the steps inside Popupsmart.
Which route fits your plan and email tool
Check your plan first. Squarespace names Core, Plus and Advanced for the built-in pop-up, and Core, Plus, Advanced and some legacy plans for code injection. Use the built-in pop-up if a timer or scroll trigger is enough and Squarespace Email Campaigns, Mailchimp or Google Drive is where the emails should go. That route needs no extra tool.
Move to a tool when you want exit intent or another email platform. Popupsmart sends signups straight to 14 newsletter and CRM tools, among them Mailchimp, Klaviyo, MailerLite and HubSpot, on every plan, the free plan included, and reaches the rest through Zapier or Make. A free email popup builder list shows the other free options.
