How to add a popup on Wix: two routes

You add a popup on Wix with the Wix Editor's built-in popup, which opens on page load or when a visitor clicks a linked element, or with a popup tool's code in Wix's Custom code settings. The code is an embed code, the one line of JavaScript that loads a tool such as Popupsmart.

Wix's article on the Editor popup lists page load, a click and an optional delay, and no exit-intent setting. Exit intent is a trigger that fires as a visitor moves to leave the page. A tool loaded through Custom code adds it, along with scroll rules.

Route 1: the Wix Editor's popup

1. In the Editor, click Add Elements, then Interactive, then pick a category under Popups.
2. Open Set Triggers. Choosing Yes shows the popup when a page loads, and the optional Delay slider sets the wait after load. To open it from a click instead, link it to an element visitors click.
3. Choose how visitors close it: an X icon, a Close button or a click on the overlay. You can also schedule the popup.
4. Publish, then view it on the live site. Popups set to open automatically show only there, not in the preview.

Wix allows only one popup that opens automatically per page.

Route 2: a popup tool in Custom code

1. In your site's settings, open Custom Code in the Development & integrations section.
2. Click + Add Custom Code at the top right and paste the tool's embed code.
3. Apply it to All pages, which also covers pages you create later, and place it in Body - end.
4. Publish the site, then verify the website in your Popupsmart dashboard, since popups show only on verified sites.

Wix says tracking scripts such as Google Tag Manager do not work through custom code, so use this route rather than a Tag Manager tag.

Before you paste code: a published site and a connected domain

Wix's help page says to make sure your site is published and has a connected domain before you add custom code. Wix also introduced new frontend security measures for custom code in December 2025, so a snippet that used to work may be blocked until its provider updates it. Check the popup on the published site.

Warning: if you assign a different domain to your site, Wix deletes your code snippets, so paste the code again. Wix gives no support for technical issues with third-party snippets and points you to the tool's provider.

Which route fits your offer

Use the Editor popup for an offer that should open on page load or after a click, such as a button that opens a signup form. It needs no extra tool. Use a tool for visitors who are leaving, or for scroll rules.
