Website popup best practices: when to show it, how often and on mobile

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerWait until the visitor has read something, show one popup at a time, stop it after a signup or close, and use a thin banner on content pages and phones. Offer something concrete for the email.

Website popup best practices: the rules in short

Website popup best practices come down to four rules from Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) and Google, and a popup builder carries most of them as settings.

  • Timing: never show a popup before visitors can get value from the page.
  • Frequency: one popup at a time, and stop it after a signup or a close.
  • Mobile: a thin banner on content pages and phones.
  • Offer: something valuable and tangible in exchange for an email address.

NN/g separates modal overlays, which disable the page until the visitor interacts, from nonmodal ones, which leave links and buttons usable.

Timing: after the visitor has seen value

NN/g's rule is never to show a popup before users can glean value from your website. On content pages it says to let people read right away. For an email ask, it suggests a minimally intrusive nonmodal overlay near a corner, after a relevant action such as finishing a post.

Popupsmart's WordPress page cites its own 2026 benchmark: popups that wait before appearing convert 0.83% against 0.61% for popups shown the instant the page loads. The benchmark compares campaigns as marketers set them up, with no random assignment, so read it as a lean.

Frequency: one popup at a time, and stop after a signup

NN/g says showing multiple popups one after another makes a site look unprofessional and overwhelms users. Wix allows only one automatic popup per page, and Squarespace's pop-up has a Frequency setting with a Never option for returning visitors.

Popupsmart's display frequency offers every pageview, every session or once every day or month, plus stop rules: after an email submit or button click, after a close, or after a set number of visits. Its help center warns that popups on every page can annoy visitors. Its benchmark finds the first two views in a week convert at similar rates, 1.33% and 1.22%, and conversion falls from the third view. From the sixth view it is 0.41%.

Mobile: small, easy to close and switched on per device

NN/g says to replace a newsletter popup on a content page with a thin, easy-to-dismiss banner at the top. Google asks for banners that take up only a small fraction of the screen, and its 2016 post names a popup covering the main content right after arrival from search results. Squarespace's pop-up fills half a phone screen.

Popupsmart documents a desktop and mobile switch on each popup, and its pages disagree on the default, so check the mobile switch on each popup. Its help center says non-responsive mobile popups annoy users because they block content on small screens. A separate mobile campaign is possible by disabling the desktop view.

Design and the offer: something concrete for the email address

NN/g says most overlays appear at the wrong time, interrupt users during critical tasks, use poor language and add to disorientation. Its fix for the email ask is a valuable, tangible offer. Popupsmart's coupon element supports four code types: a fixed code, an existing Shopify discount code, a list of unique codes, and unique codes created in Shopify per visitor. Its privacy policy checkbox can be made required. This is not legal advice on consent.

Popupsmart's display frequency, with stop after a signup, is on every plan, the free plan included, with one live popup. A/B testing to check a change starts on Advanced. The best popup builder for small business compares it with other tools. Do pop ups affect SEO reads Google's guidance, and how to create an exit intent popup covers the leaving trigger.
